TRANSPLANTATION OF ISLETS OF LANGERHANS AS TREATMENT FOR TYPE I DIABETES MELLITUS

Abstract

With reports since 1500 BC, diabetes has been a disease that has become popular due to the increase in cases identified over the years and that currently affects around 88,000 Brazilians. Diabetes Mellitus is characterized by the indefinite regulation of the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, as a result of a deficiency in the production of insulin, a hormone produced by the β cells produced in the pancreas. The treatment of this pathology is given by the injection of insulin and medicines to control the body's homeostasis, but with the great demand for them, part of the patients does not have access to treatments due to the high cost and scarcity in the public health network. Studies evaluate the use of transplantation of islets of Langerhans as a treatment therapy for Diabetes Mellitus type I, this option being a promising alternative, in this context the objective of this study was to carry out a bibliographical research evaluating the transplantation of islets of Langerhans as a treatment for diabetes type I mellitus. It was observed that the transplantation of pancreatic islets is an alternative that has achieved success in its tests, and has shown to be a great solution for the restoration of insulin independence and is being studied to be the best treatment against diabetes.
